Executive AI education for senior leaders: what to look for
Good executive AI education for senior leaders teaches you to decide on artificial intelligence and answer for it, not to code it: which cases deserve AI, how they are measured, what the EU AI Act requires and who oversees each system. Before choosing, check what it attests, how it assesses you and whether it works with cases from your own company.

Why does a senior leader need executive AI education?
Because responsibility does not stay with the vendor. Under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the company using an AI system under its own authority is the deployer, and the people who decide in that company answer for how it is used.
The Act reaches UK businesses too: it applies to providers and deployers outside the EU when the system's output is used in the EU (Article 2). In the UK, the ICO's guidance on AI and data protection sets out what the UK GDPR expects; the ICO says it is under review after the Data (Use and Access) Act.
Article 4, as amended by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744, asks providers and deployers to take measures to support the AI literacy of their staff. It does not set a particular standard, but it makes training the people who use and decide part of the job.
For high-risk systems, Article 26 goes further: human oversight must be assigned to people with the necessary competence, training and authority. Systems listed in Annex III, such as those used to select staff or evaluate workers, carry those obligations from 2 December 2027.
What kinds of executive AI education are there?
Three common formats, with what each one usually offers. They do not compete: they meet different needs.
| Short AI literacy course | Long executive programme | Hands-on deployment certification | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Everyone on the staff who uses AI tools | Senior leaders who decide AI strategy and governance | People who build and deploy AI inside the company |
| Usual length | Hours or a few days | Months | Weeks, with a real project |
| What you take away | Concepts, risks and good practice in use | The judgement to decide, govern and answer to a board | A system built, measured and handed over |
| How it is assessed | A quiz or attendance | Assignments, cases and a final project | Labs, a project at a company and a defence |
| When it fits | To meet the AI literacy duty in Article 4 | When AI has become a board decision | When someone in-house has to build it |
What should you look for in executive AI education for senior leaders?
Seven questions worth asking before you sign up to any programme:
- 1What it attests: whether it is a degree awarded by a university or a credential from a private institute, and whether the provider says so plainly.
- 2Whether it covers the law with articles and dates: Articles 4, 26 and 50 and Annex III of the AI Act, with the timetable set by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744, plus UK GDPR guidance if you operate in the UK.
- 3Whether it works with cases from your company or your sector, with data that never leaves your systems.
- 4Whether it teaches you to measure: a baseline before deployment and one metric per problem, so you know what really changes.
- 5Whether it separates deciding from building: leaders decide what is done and who oversees each system; the technical team builds it.
- 6Whether the assessment is real: a case, a final project or a defence, not just attendance.
- 7Who teaches it, from where, and who signs the contract with you.

Which programme covers AI at board level?
Applied Intelligence · AI and Cyber Behaviour is designed for CTOs, CIOs and heads of AI who have to decide on real deployments and answer for them to a board.
It works on four capabilities: human governance of AI models, behavioural security, product architecture with explainable AI, and an institutional policy for responsible use.
The idea behind it is that AI projects rarely fail on the model; they fail on the people who have to use it. So the programme measures behaviour, not only the system.
What if someone in your company has to build the AI?
Then executive education is not enough: you need a craft. The Forward Deployed Engineer is the person who builds AI inside the company, with its data and its team, and leaves it running without them.
The SciTechBiz Institute certifies the role with the Forward Deployed Engineer Certification: 12 weeks with 13 modules, 12 labs, a four-week project at a real company and an oral defence. Leaders decide and oversee; the FDE builds and hands over.

- The terms and price of each programme are on its page at the Academy.
What people ask most
01Is AI training compulsory for senior leaders?
Article 4 of the EU AI Act asks companies to take measures to support their staff's AI literacy, without requiring a particular credential. For high-risk systems, Article 26 requires oversight by people with the necessary competence, training and authority.
02How long should executive AI education last?
It depends on what you need. A short course covers staff AI literacy; deciding on and governing AI in a company calls for a programme of several months, with cases and an assessed final project.
03Does it apply if my company is in the UK?
The EU AI Act applies when your AI system is placed on the EU market or its output is used in the EU. Inside the UK, the ICO's guidance on AI and data protection sets out the UK GDPR expectations.
04What is the difference between executive education and the Forward Deployed Engineer Certification?
Executive education prepares you to decide and oversee. The Forward Deployed Engineer Certification prepares you to build AI inside the company and leave it running, with labs, a real project and an oral defence.
