Forward Deployed Engineer: what it is, what it does and how to get certified
A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is the engineer who builds artificial intelligence inside the client company, with its data and its team, and who is measured by use in production rather than by the demo. The job ends when the company runs on its own, and the role can be certified with the SciTechBiz Institute's Forward Deployed Engineer Certification.

Where does the name Forward Deployed Engineer come from?
The name comes from enterprise software: instead of selling a tool and waiting for the client to set it up, the vendor deploys an engineer into the client's own house.
The word that matters is forward, as in the front line: the engineer works next to the people who will use the system, with real data and real problems, not in an office far away from them.
With generative AI, the territory of this craft is the gap between a demo that impresses and a system that staff use every day. A language model without the company's judgement, data and processes is good for a presentation and little else.
That is why an FDE is not measured by what they build but by what is left running: a system in production, measured, with someone in-house who knows how to maintain it.
How is it different from a consultant or a software developer?
The three roles complement each other. The table sums up what is usual in each, not a rule.
| Forward Deployed Engineer | Consultant | Software developer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where they work | Inside the client, next to the team that will use the system | With the board and the heads of each area | In their own team, from a specification |
| What they work with | The client's data and systems and the judgement of its experts | Interviews, diagnosis and method | Written requirements and code |
| What they deliver | An AI system in production, measured and documented | A diagnosis, a plan and support for the change | Software that meets the specification |
| How they are measured | By use in production and by the problem's metric | By adoption of the plan | By code quality and deadlines |
| When the job ends | When the company runs on its own, after handover | When the agreed project closes | When the agreed version ships |
What does a Forward Deployed Engineer do, step by step?
This is how an FDE works with the Legathum AI-First Hybridisation Method v3, the method taught in the certification:
- 1Qualify: decide with the company whether the case deserves AI and whether there is data and an owner for it.
- 2Discover in the field: sit with the people who do the work and turn a vague «we want AI» into measurable problems, each with an owner, a metric and a baseline.
- 3Capture the criterion: write down the rules the in-house expert uses to decide, so the system works with that judgement and not a generic one.
- 4Prototype in a day: build a first version with the team and decide whether the case goes ahead. It is a stage of the method, not a promised timescale.
- 5Build with evals: measure every agent with a suite of 20 to 50 tasks drawn from real failures, and red-team it before release.
- 6Deploy and adopt: put it into production in phases and check that the team uses it in their daily work.
- 7Hand over: leave documentation, tests and owners so the company runs without the FDE.
Six tests signed by the client mark progress: Loop, Bearer, Mirror, Security, Adoption and Handover.
What does the EU AI Act have to do with an FDE?
A great deal, because the FDE puts the system in the company's hands, and the company using it under its own authority is the deployer under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689.
The Act also reaches UK businesses: under Article 2 it applies to providers placing AI systems on the EU market wherever they are established, and to providers and deployers outside the EU when the system's output is used in the EU.
Article 50 has applied since 2 August 2026: people talking to an AI system must be told it is an AI, unless that is obvious from the context.
High-risk systems listed in Annex III, such as those used to select staff or evaluate workers, have their obligations from 2 December 2027, following the new timetable set by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744.
Article 26 requires deployers to assign human oversight of a high-risk system to people with the necessary competence, training and authority. In the UK, the ICO's guidance on AI and data protection covers the UK GDPR side.
In practice, the FDE documents an AI Act sheet for each agent with its risk, its tests and its human oversight, and no agent leaves shadow mode without passing the Security Test.
Who can become a Forward Deployed Engineer?
You do not need a software engineering background. The FDE Licence has no entry test: it is for people who already build with Claude or ChatGPT, whether or not they can code, and for engineers, data analysts and heads of operations or product.
What it does require is method: breaking a problem down, measuring, passing security and leaving the system in the client's hands. That is learnt by doing, which is why the certification ends with a four-week project at a real company and an oral defence.
The tools are today's: Claude Code as a copilot, Python, Node and git, installed with you in the first week. The craft does not depend on a particular tool: it depends on knowing what to build and when it is right.
How do you get certified as a Forward Deployed Engineer?
With the SciTechBiz Institute's Forward Deployed Engineer Certification, taken within the FDE Licence:
A 12-week programme
13 modules, 80 lessons, 796 minutes of video and 12 labs over the first eight weeks, then a four-week project at a real company.
Assessed in practice
Labs that check themselves and are marked against a human rubric, a Code of Conduct exam, a knowledge exam and a 30-minute oral defence before Deibson Silva.
The title you earn
People who pass are awarded the title of AI-First Hybridisation Architect, with a digital certificate and a verification code.
What it lets you do
Deploy Legathum, iPersonality and Digital Twin inside the client company, paired with a certified consultant: the FDE builds and the consultant supports the board.

Honest limits
- An FDE does not promise the client a timescale for results: Prototype in a day is a stage of the method, not a guarantee.
- The certification attests a competence, never a job or an income.
- To deliver to client companies you need a valid FDE Certification and a signed Framework Contract and data protection agreements. The FDE annex to the contracts is being prepared.
- The programme's labs use synthetic data only; in the real project, the company's data never leaves its systems.
- The SciTechBiz Institute is not a university: its certifications are awarded by the Institute itself and are not recognised by any education authority.
- Today the programme is taught in Spanish: 27 Spanish videos are published at the Academy, and the English videos arrive in November 2026.
What people ask most
01What does forward deployed mean?
Deployed on the front line: the engineer works inside the client company, next to the team that will use the system, instead of building at a distance from a specification.
02Does a Forward Deployed Engineer need to be able to code?
It helps, but it is not the condition. What matters is breaking problems down, measuring and deciding what gets built. The FDE Licence has no entry test: you build with Claude Code as a copilot and the craft is taught.
03How is it different from an AI consultant?
The consultant diagnoses and supports the board; the FDE builds the system inside the client and leaves it running. In the SciTechBiz Community they work as a pair at each client company.
04Does the EU AI Act matter to a UK-based FDE?
Yes, whenever the system is placed on the EU market or its output is used in the EU (Article 2). For UK data protection, the ICO's guidance on AI and data protection applies alongside it.
05Is there a Forward Deployed Engineer certification?
Yes. The SciTechBiz Institute, in Madrid, runs the Forward Deployed Engineer Certification: 13 modules, 80 lessons, 12 labs, a four-week project at a real company and a 30-minute oral defence. It is accessed with the FDE Licence.
